Several years ago, Robert R. McCammon’s publishers balked when he tried to write outside of the neat little horror box they’d put him in thanks to the success of novels like Swan Song and Mine. So, he walked away from them, and from publishing as a whole.
Fortunately, he didn’t walk away from writing. Years later he returned with a historical thriller called Speaks the Nightbird. The success of that book has since spawned two more novels featuring the character of Matthew Corbett, The Queen of Bedlam and Mr. Slaughter. McCammon also seems to have found a publishing house he’s comfortable with in Subterranean Press, which released the last Corbett book and re-released one of this earlier novels, The Wolf’s Hour, last year.
Today brings the announcement that Subterranean is publishing a new McCammon novel later this year. The Five is the story of a marginal rock band’s encounter with a damaged Iraq war veteran, and the subsequent fallout of their time together. It’s a book McCammon has mentioned several times in interviews lately, although the author remains reluctant to divulge a lot of details.
Pre-order information is available at the above link, as well as details on how you can have your copy inscribed by the author. The book is scheduled for release in three editions: a trade hardcover, a limited signed-numbered-slipcased edition, and a lettered edition that will come in a traycase.
